Three ways

Chicken, buff or vegetarian

Same wrapper, same achar, three fillings. If it's your first plate, buff is the one Nepalis order.

What makes a momo

The parts of a momo

A thin wrapper, spiced filling and tomato achar make the Nepali dumpling everyone knows.

01

Spiced filling

Chicken, buffalo or vegetables seasoned with ginger, garlic, coriander and cabbage.

02

Thin wrapper

Plain dough holds the filling and keeps the dumpling light enough for a full plate.

03

Tomato achar

The tomato-and-chilli dipping sauce brings acidity, heat and the flavour that completes the plate.

If you came here for dumplings

Momos are Nepali dumplings

Auckland has plenty of dumpling houses. If you've been searching for dumplings in the CBD and haven't tried a momo yet, this is the version worth crossing town for.

The shape is familiar, a pleated half-moon or a round pouch, but the flavour sits somewhere between Indian and Tibetan cooking. Nepali momos lean on ginger, garlic, coriander, cumin and timmur (Sichuan pepper's Himalayan cousin), and they come with achar rather than a soy dip. The result is warmer and more aromatic than a soup dumpling, and closer to a curry in the way the spice builds.

Steamed is the default and the best introduction. Once you know the flavour, the rest of the Nepali menu opens up: buff sukuti chowmein, sekuwa and thukpa.

Momo questions

Where can I get the best momos in Auckland?
We're on Commerce Street in Auckland CBD. Chicken, buff and vegetarian momos are served with house tomato achar. You can pick up from Shop 8, 8 Commerce Street, Auckland CBD, Auckland 1010 or get them delivered.
Are momos the same as dumplings?
Momos are dumplings, the Nepali and Tibetan branch of the family. The differences are in the details: momo wrappers are thinner than most Chinese dumpling skins, the filling leans on ginger, garlic, coriander and Himalayan spice rather than soy and sesame, and they're served with achar, a tomato-and-chilli sauce, instead of a soy-vinegar dip.
What's the difference between chicken and buff momos?
Chicken momos are the milder, more familiar starting point. Buff momos, buffalo, are what most Nepalis order at home: richer, denser and juicier, with more spice coming through. If you want the version you'd get in Kathmandu, order buff.
Do you have vegetarian momos?
Yes. Our veg momos are filled with cabbage, carrot, onion and the same Himalayan spice mix, steamed in the same thin wrapper. They're a genuine menu item, not an afterthought.
How many momos come in a serve?
A serve is a full plate designed to work as a light meal on its own, or as a starter to share between two. If you're feeding a group, ordering a mix of chicken and buff plates travels and shares best.
Where are the best dumplings in Auckland CBD?
If you are searching for dumplings in the CBD, momos are the Nepali version and we are on Commerce Street, two minutes from Britomart. Chicken and vegetarian are $16.99, and buff is $17.99. For more about Nepali dumplings, see our guide to the best momos in Auckland.
